Our Corporate Services Department is seeking a talented, detail oriented individual to join our team. Reporting to the City Solicitor and Assistant City Solicitor, the Staff Solicitor prepares, negotiates, and reviews legal documents and agreements related to procurement and construction, such as RFPs, RFQs, tenders, MMCD, CCDC, and supplementary conditions; and commercial contracts including complex partnership and operating agreements, funding agreements and other related documents. The incumbent also provides legal advice and opinions on construction, procurement, municipal, corporate/commercial, environmental, risk management, and other legal issues to City departments, including on issues that arise on major civic projects. Reviews and drafts reports to Council and Committee, provides guidance to administrative personnel in the Legal Department and performs related work as required.

Qualifications include Bachelor of Laws (i.e. LLB) or Juris Doctor (i.e. JD) and a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Construction/Procurement lawyer with related Corporate/Commercial experience, preferably in the municipal or public sector OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, client management techniques and policies, rules, regulations, and legal requirements governing the work of the City. Experience with BCOnLine and legal research resources required. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, provide sound legal advice in a logical and concise manner and establish priorities and accomplish objectives in a timely manner are vital to the role. Good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia and a Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required.
